6000 ODI Runs

Chester-le-Street – Joe Root passed 6000 ODI runs as England ran out easy winners in the first ODI against Sri Lanka. Chasing 186, England suffered an anxious start, before Joe’s 79no guided the home side to a 5 wicket victory.

After England’s decisive IT20 series win over Sir Lanka, the attention of both sides turned to the ODIs.

While the bowlers dismissed Sri Lanka for 185, England’s progress with the bat was not always smooth. By the twelfth over England were in a little difficult at 80-4 (Liam Livingstone 9).

Joe then calmed the nerves, with an innings of understated run accumulation. On reaching 38 he passed 6000 ODI runs. In the list of England’s leading ODI run getters only Eoin Morgan has scored more runs than Joe.

It took Joe 58 balls to score his half-century (2 fours). With overs to spare Joe and Moeen Ali took the score from 80-4 to 171-5. After the dismissal of Moeen, Joe guided England to victory alongside Sam Curran in the thirty-fifth over.
