A New Record

Joe Root has set a new record for Test runs scored in a calendar year by an England batter.

Joe passed Michael Vaughan’s previous best of 1,461 runs while scoring an all important 86* in the first Ashes Test. Since January, Joe has scored 1,541 runs in thirteen Test.

England supporters will have breathed a collective sigh of relief after seeing Joe’s exceptional batting form continue at the Gabba.

Australia have been on top during the opening Test. First time around, England were dismissed for 147 before Australia took control when posting 425.

On a third day retrieval mission, Joe (86*) and Dawid Malan (80*) took the first steps towards frustrating Australia’s hopes of victory.

At the close of play the pair had taken England to 220-2, just 58 runs behind.
