Joe Becomes a Patron

Today, The Children’s Hospital Charity announced that England Test captain Joe Root has become a patron. The charity supports Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Sheffield Children’s Hospital sees over 276,000 patients every year from both the UK and around the world.

The hospital is just one of three hospital’s dedicated to children in the UK.

Hosting world-leading clinicians in care and research, the hospital provides some of the best available medical and surgical services. Demand for these vital services rise year on year.

The charity funds life-saving specialist medical equipment and new facilities to extend the range of treatment.  It also supports pioneering research as well as improvements to the hospital’s physical environment.

Growing up in the suburb of Dore and attending school in the city, Joe’s ties with Sheffield are already strong.

Now, these ties have deepened with Joe becoming a patron of the Children’s Hospital Charity.

As a patron, Joe will support the charity’s upcoming fundraising efforts to transform the facilities at Sheffield Children’s Hospital through their Building a Better Future Appeal.

At present, the charity is raising £14.25m for a new Emergency Department, Helipad and to transform the Cancer and Leukaemia ward. This is its biggest ever fundraising appeal.

Speaking about his new role, Joe said “I have been aware of the work undertaken by all the staff at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for some time. The care and support given to all their young patients is truly amazing. I am delighted and very honoured to be asked to join The Children’s Hospital Charity as a patron. I can’t wait to support and become involved with the Charity”.

David Vernon-Edwards, Director of The Children’s Hospital Charity, added: “We are absolutely thrilled that Joe, one of Sheffield’s most illustrious cricketers, will be joining us as a patron.

“We’re sure Joe will be the perfect fit to support the world-class staff and expertise at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. We look forward to working with Joe to deliver these projects, which will not happen without charity funding.”
