Second Century in Two Tests

Galle – It’s a second century in two Tests for Joe Root. After scoring 228 in the first Test, today Joe followed up with 186 crucial runs in England’s first innings of the second Test.

Sri Lanka still hold the upper hand. Yet, England are not without hope of maintaining their 1-0 series lead, thanks to Joe’s majestic innings.

In reply to Sri Lanka’s 381, England were 5-2 when Joe came to the crease. His innings ended with the last ball of the third day with England on 339-9.

Joe’s innings was an exemplar in playing spin bowling. While other England batters appeared uncomfortable, Joe’s mastery of technique and craft gave the impression of a world-class batter at ease.

Joe was aided by two substantial stands. First came 97 runs for the fifth wicket with Jos Buttler (55). Followed by a seventh wicket 81 run partnership with Dom Bess (32).

After two heavy scoring innings, Joe is now closing in on third placed Alex Stewart on the all-time list of England’s leading Test run-scorers.
