Match Review 1

Match Review 1 reports on the performances of five Phoenix family members in the opening regional matches of the Bob Willis Trophy.

North Group

Lancs (4) vs. Leicestershire (22)

The up-coming England vs. Pakistan Test at Emirates Old Trafford, resulted in George Balderson making is first-class debut in Lancashire’s home match vs. Leicestershire at Worcester. The young all-rounder made 29 (5 fours) in Lancashire’s first innings of 322 all-out.

Leicestershire made a first innings total of 409-8 dec, with George claiming two wickets on his debut, finishing with figures of 2-75 off 20 overs. Lancashire were dismissed for 236 in their second innings. With Leicestershire requiring 150 to win, they duly knocked off the runs, for the loss of 3 wickets.

Notts. (6) vs. Derbyshire (20)

Joe Clarke got off to a slow start with the bat at Trent Bridge. Joe could not repeat his century in the opening match of the previous season’s County Championship, scoring 8 and 2 in Notts two innings.

Matt Critchley looked on course for a first innings half-century before being involved in an unfortunate run out when on 45 (6 fours). After four days of nip and tuck, Derbyshire took the win in the final over, creating a club record by scoring 365 runs in the fourth innings chase.

South Group

Sussex (19) vs. Hants (3)

Sussex won their encounter with Hampshire within three days by 94 runs. In a low scoring match at Hove, Mason Crane returned match figures of 6-69 off 17.1 overs.

Surrey (3) vs. Middlesex (22)

At the Kia Oval, Nick Gubbins shone with the bat, on the first day,  scoring 150no. On day 2, Nick took his innings to 192 (19 fours, 1 six) helping Middlesex to 347-6 dec. He followed up in the second innings scoring  60 crucial runs (7 fours).

A first innings 92 (12 fours) by Scott Borthwick was the highlight of Surrey’s reply of 282 all-out. Surrey were all out for 123 in their second innings giving the visitors 190 run victory,
